How to do a Half-up, Flat Clip, Thick Hair Braid

If you’re looking for a hairstyle for long hair that has texture, holds comfortably, and doesn’t pull or rip, gives your locks a break from the dry winter air and heated tools, this is for you!  A half-up, thick hair braid with a flat hair clip lets you keep your hair back so you can read a book, run errands or do chores, or focus on work.

Because you’re using a flat hair clip, you can lay your hair back when it's time to relax and not have to undo your style. Unlike tight braids that pull on your scalp, this thicker braid starts in the hair clip vs. the scalp, and the loose weaves don’t require pulling which could cause dry hair to break.

If you have dry hair from hair dryers, curling irons, or the winter air, you can run a hair oil like argan oil to help add moisture while you wear this look.

Skill level: Beginner to medium
Face shape: All
Hair length: Long

You will need:

To do this look:

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of your hair.
  2. Separate your hair into a top and bottom section just above your temples and secure the top section below the crown of your head in the flat hair clip.
  3. Divide the section hanging from the clip into three equal parts and begin braiding.
    1. Cross the right over the middle section so it becomes the middle.
    2. Cross the left over the middle so it becomes the middle.
  4. Continue until you get to where you want the braid to end.
  5. Now add a hair tie to secure the bottom of the braid.
  6. With your fingers, blend the bottom of the braid with the lower portion of the half-down section.
It’s that easy to have a new winter, or any season look that gives your hair time to heal while holding comfortably and looking great. If you found this style guide helpful, enter your email below for more just like it.
