5 Medium Length Hairstyles for Mid to Late Fall

The dry air of the fall and heaters in your home can dry out your hair. A s the holidays approach, you'll want your hair ready for heated tools like curlers, irons, and blow dryers.  That's why now is the time to repair your hair and wear less damaging hairstyles so you can enjoy your favorite holiday looks with shine, bounce, and life.

We've come up with five hairstyles for medium length hair that are perfect for letting you repair your hair from the UV in summer, so it can hydrate during fall, and be ready for styling as the winter holidays arrive.

Half-up Claw Clip

It’s classic, it's timeless, and it's easy to style in minutes. Best of all you can use a classic claw clip with wings or a flat hair clip so you can lay your head back without an “ouch” moment.

By using a paddle brush instead of a comb or tight bristled brush you can reduce the traction and friction when smoothing out tangles and knots, and a claw clip with flexible teeth that doesn’t slide you can capture your hair in one grasp so it secures without having to scrape your scalp.

  1. Smooth your hair out with a paddle brush.
  2. Separate your hair into a top and bottom section about the height of your eyes.
  3. Pull your hair back gently so it doesn’t create traction on your scalp and secure it in your claw clip.

Blunt Bob

Bobs don’t require much maintenance, and the clean trim of the blunt bob lets your stylist remove split ends so you can keep your hair medium length or let it grow out. And the beauty of the bob cut is it looks great short, medium, and as your hair reaches your shoulders when you get ready for longer locks.

Bobs can sit comfortably under a fall hat and under a beanie cap if it gets cold, and you can smooth out creases with your fingers once you remove the hat. This reduces the friction leading to less breakage when compared to a brush or comb which is important in fall.

The look is professional enough for work and casual enough for going out with friends. Go messy for a youthful and fun look that works for school and parties, or neat and sleek for more formal events.

You can cut this at home, but it isn’t recommended as the blunt look requires a straight line all around, and you need to trim behind your head. It’s definitely one style you’ll want to have done by a professional hairdresser, but if you’re a DIYer, click here to find our guide on how to trim and style a blunt bob.

Heatless Waves

Heatless curls are great, but they require you to pull your hair tight which isn’t good as you’re supposed to let it rest before holiday styles.  Heatless curls also take all night to set. That’s why we love heatless waves. You don’t have to pull them into as tight of a bun, and they can set in a shorter amount of time.

Best of all they only require your fingers to brush them out so you can reduce the pulling and friction compared to a brush or a comb allowing your locks to rest and heal.

  1. Dampen your hair with cool water and run styling mousse through it with your fingers.
  2. Pull your hair to the crown of your head and secure it with a spiral hair tie (less friction than elastic) into a ponytail.
  3. Twist the ponytail into a coil and wrap it to a top knot bun then secure the tip into the hair tie.
  4. Let it rest for 5 to 8 hours and then release it.
  5. Smooth the waves gently with your fingers to the desired wave style and strengthen them with a light hair spray.

Scrunchie Ponytail

Ponytails are a go-to when you need a quick way to secure your hair out of the way, but a hair tie may pull tight or add friction depending on the material used. That’s where a silk scrunchie comes in.

They’re great for sleeping in and for holding a ponytail with less friction than cotton.  And some have slip resistant technology and a hair coil inside like the ones here at TELETIES. Unless you’re doing a sleek pony, you can use your fingers to smooth knots and tangles out and pull your hair back without needing to run a brush or comb through.

  1. Smooth knots and tangles out of your hair with your fingers.
  2. Pull your hair to the crown of your head and secure it in the scrunchie.
  3. Twist the scrunchie and feed your hair through again if it is too loose to hold or the scrunchie slips.

Side Part Lob

Perfect for an asymmetrical look, or for some drama with your style. The part lob is the perfect and fall friendly hairstyle for medium length hair when you are planning on growing your hair out a bit longer, or just don’t want to go for a trim or dusting.

Fun fact: A lob is identical in style to a bob, but the bottom portion hangs below your chin and above your collarbone where a bob is just below or above your chin.

  1. Wet your hair and comb it back gently.
  2. With a comb, separate your hair for the longer part that passes over your head away from the shorter section, and then lift the longer section up and over your head.
  3. Now gently comb the longer section of hair over so it becomes sleek and lays flat, then spritz with a finishing spray to keep it holding in place.

Pro-tip: Use a wide tooth comb as it will have less friction and tugging on your hair.  You can also use a detangling spray to keep it smooth and sleek.

Fall looks for medium length hair don’t have to be boring when your hair needs a rest before the heated tools come out for the holidays and winter. The five above can keep your style on point the entire season.
