5 Cold Weather, Flat Clip Hairstyles to Cozy Up With

Winter air means winter hair which can frizz from the lack of moisture, and get dry from heated tools like hair dryers or curling irons. That’s why it's important to give your locks a break while you hydrate them, and give your scalp some time off.  That also means adjusting your styles and tools.

Flat hair clips are the perfect solution when it’s too cold to go out, and you just want to read a book or binge a series.  They let you lay your head back without an ouch moment when compared to a traditional claw hair clip when the wings put the pressure back against your head. And the flat hair clip hairstyles below let your hair hang loose instead of pulling tight which provides your scalp with needed relief compared to a tight hair bun and tight braids.

Here’s our top styles for you to relax with in fall and winter for medium and long hair.

Flat Clip French Twist

If you want your hair up, but secured vs. flying free like a ponytail, the flat clip French twist is a perfect go-to hairstyle. And when you use a flat hair clip instead of a classic one you can wear it all day from doing chores to taking a nap, or an online yoga class if it's too cold to go to the gym.

  1. Gently pull your hair back to the lower portion of your head like you’re doing a low bun.
  2. Twist the end so it forms a coil and fold it up against your head.
  3. Secure it in the flat hair clip.

Half-up Top Knot

If you like the movement of a hair bun, and the comfort of feeling your hair on your shoulders, a half-up top knot with a flat clip is the perfect combination. To add extra stability to the bun, use a spiral hair tie instead of elastic as elastic may pull too tight. You may also be able to go with no hair tie as the flat clip will help to hold the knot section in place.

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of your hair.
  2. Section off the top half of your hair around the height of your temples.
  3. Gather the top section into a high ponytail.
  4. With two fingers, gently twist the ponytail to form a coil and wrap it around the base to form a bun.
    1. Secure it with a hair tie if you want the bun to hold more secure.
  5. If there is hair sticking out, you can always secure it into the hair tie if you are using one, or into the flat hair clip and let it blend with the lower section.
  6. Place the flat hair clip at the base of the bun.
  7. Style the bottom half of your hair however you’d like.

Loose Thick Braid

Tight braids pull on your scalp, but they don’t have to if you start them lower than your scalp and don’t pull them tight. That’s why a flat hair clip is perfect for this style.

You can place the clip towards the crown of your head, or wherever you want the braid to begin, and let the clip take the brunt of the pulling so you can enjoy a textured braid hairstyle.

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of your hair.
  2. Place the flat hair clip where you want the braid to begin.
  3. Section the portion hanging from the clip into three sections.
  4. Cross the right section over the middle, then the left over the middle to the right, and repeat to create the braid.
  5. Finish the braid with a spiral hair tie to hold it in place.

Low Ponytail

Sometimes you need fast and functional, and that’s where the low ponytail comes in. Your hair will be kept behind your head so it is out of the way if you’re cooking, reading, or need to concentrate; and the wideness of the flat hair clip helps to hold even the thickest hair in place.

  1. Smooth tangles and knots out of your hair with your fingers if you’re in a rush, and use a brush if you’re not.
  2. Gather your hair at the lower section of the back of your head.
  3. Place it in the flat clip.
  4. Smooth it out with your fingers.

Half-up With Twists

When you’re having friends come over, or you’ll be out for a while and don’t want to have to redo your hair, the flat clip half-up with twists is your go to. It has texture and movement, and the flat clip looks great when you’re outside running errands or visiting friends, and lets you rest easy when you return.

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of your hair.
  2. Separate your hair horizontally so there is a top section around the same height as your temples to create the half-up section of the hairstyle, and secure the bottom half in the hair tie.
  3. On the left side of the top section, separate out a portion of hair and split it into two smaller sections.
  4. Twist both smaller sections with your fingers so your hair forms two ropes but doesn’t coil, and then begin wrapping them around each other so they form a twist.
  5. Once you get towards the back of your head, open the flat clip and secure the base of the twists into it.
  6. Repeat on the right side and make sure it is even with the left.
  7. Now comb through the lower section of your hair and blend like you would a standard half-up half-down look.

Just because your hair needs to rest in the late fall and winter doesn’t mean you have to have boring hairstyles or hide it under a hat.
