A Top Knot Bun with Bangs

Just like you see in the featured image above, a top knot bun with Halloween hair ties is a perfect look. Leave a bang out on the side and curl it for a movie star or kung fu heroine, and it is ideal when done sleek and bang free for a graceful ballerina, business professional, pixie or fairy, and other costumes where stylish and professional are key.

You will need:

To do this look:

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of the hair so it is smooth.
  2. Secure their hair in a high ponytail on the crown of their head.
  3. Gently twist the ponytail into a coil, but not so much that it starts bending, and wrap it around the base of the ponytail.
  4. Once fully wrapped secure it with the other hair tie and tuck the end of the ponytail in.

If you want a sleek look finish it with a light hairspray or finishing spray. If you want sparkle and shine, use a glittery Halloween hairspray, because it is that season after all.

Bubble Braids

Do they want to be a Genie? Maybe they’re going for a 1970’s, 80’s, or 90’s vintage vibe. Bubble braids are the perfect solution for these Halloween kids costume themes.

They’re easy to do, can be customized with colored hair ties, scrunchies, and hair clips to bring the color palette from their costume to their hair, and worn to the back, off to the side, and with bubbles as large or small as they like.

You will need:

  • A hair brush
  • Hair fasteners like hair ties, butterfly hair clips, or scrunchies
  • A light finishing spray

To do this look:

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of their hair.
  2. Secure the top of the bubble braid, where you want it to begin, into a ponytail.
  3. About two inches down add the first hair fastener.
  4. Now tease the bubble to the size you want.
  5. If you want large bubbles, move the fastener lower.
  6. Now repeat the process creating bubbles out until you get to the bottom of the braid and spritz it with a light hairspray to help the bubbles keep their shape.

Big, Voluminous, Teased Hair

When you have a budding country rock star, an 80’s rock-and-roll singer, a witch or a zombie queen ready to run a muck collecting candy, a huge teased hairstyle is the way to go. Big hair, don’t care is what we can call this one as it can be done smooth for a singer or made messy for the undead.

This style even works for hair that is normally limp and hard to get to hold in place. There is a technique you’ll be using called back combing which helps build volume. Out of the styles on this list, this one will take the most time, but it is worth the effort for the effect.

You will need:

  • A hair brush
  • A teasing comb with a tail
  • A teasing brush
  • Volumizing hair spray

To do this look:

  1. Brush their hair free from knots and tangles.
  2. Part their hair, if needed for the look, with the tail of the teasing comb and smooth it out.
  3. With the tail, lift a portion of hair towards the part.
  4. Spray the section that is lifted with the volumizing hair spray and instead of combing from root to tip, gently comb backwards with the teasing comb (called back combing) to bring the hair towards the scalp and get it to hold, then remove the comb from their hair.
  5. Do not run the comb upwards as you’ll be undoing the back comb, not to mention adding stress by stretching their hair which can cause breakage.
  6. Now back comb a few more times and you’ll notice the base is a bit fluffy and volumized. Give it a quick spritz with the hair spray to get it to hold, and begin on the next section.
  7. Once you finish use your teasing brush to smooth out the hair for a more polished look as a country singer, or let their hair fly free and messy for a zombie, rock and roll star, or more wild looks.
  8. Finish the teased hairstyle with a spritz of the hairspray to hold it in place.

If she’s going to be a rockstar, add streaks of color with Halloween color hair spray. Witches or zombies can look extra scary with cobwebs or plastic spiders mixed throughout.

Pigtails

They’re incredibly iconic and work for a ton of movie and TV characters. There are classics like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Bubbles from the Powderpuff Girls, and even Sailor Moon. And they made a comeback with Monster’s Inc, Draculaura, and Harley Quinn.

Pigtails are perfect for trick or treating because they stay out of your daughter’s face, and can be customized to their personal style. Try braiding ribbon into her hair with this tutorial, or using temporary hair color via a Halloween hairspray with her favorite colors on each side. And the hair ties add pops of color to complete the look.

You will need:

  • A hair brush
  • Up to four hair ties
  • Any accessories or colors to customize the look

To do this look:

  1. Brush knots and tangles out of her hair.
  2. Part her hair down the middle and separate it into two sections.
  3. Secure the first section with a hair tie where you want the pigtail to start if it is a ponytail, or split the section into three parts to braid it.
  4. Style this section and add the second hair tie to keep the braid braided.
  5. Now repeat on the other side.

Middle Part with Loose Curls or Waves

This look is comfy, easy to style, and matches a ton of costumes. From Hermoine to being an Evee in Pokemon, a doctor or nurse, fairytale princess, and even a TV star, a middle part with curls is an easy to wear and multi-purpose hairstyle that helps get her hair Halloween ready quickly and easily.

You will need:

  • A hair brush
  • Heat protectant
  • Hair ties or hair clips
  • Curling iron
  • A hairspray with at least medium level hold
To do this look:
  1. Plug in and heat the curling iron using the instructions on the package.
  2. Brush knots and tangles out of her hair.
  3. Section her hair into groups with hair ties, or secure it out of the way with a claw hair clip leaving a section out.
  4. Spray this section with a heat protectant following the instructions on the bottle.
  5. Curl the section by holding the iron vertically and the tip down, then wrap the hair around the iron, hold for a few seconds, and release.
  6. Now repeat on the other sections until you have curled each section that needs it.
  7. Gently loosen the curls to the desired look, and spray it with the hairspray to keep the curls intact.
