5 Step Half-up Twist Hairstyle with a Scrunchie

If you’re tired of the same old half-up hairstyles that lack texture, or you want more pops of color, you’re in the right place! Using a scrunchie for a twisty half-up hairdo is an easy way to add a burst of color from the fabric of the scrunchie, secure your hair back for class, work, or play, and it takes less than 3 minutes to style.

You can get as creative as you’d like to make the look as unique as you. If you enjoy face framing, leave room for bangs. You can curl them, go asymmetrical, or pull them back over your ears making this look perfect for all face shapes. And you can add adornments like ribbon for more color and texture from the scrunchie.  Best of all, the style is simple making it easy for everyone to do.

You will need:

  • A hairbrush or comb
  • 1 scrunchie that can hold a ponytail
    • Large for thick and long hair
    • Medium for curly and wavy, as well as in between
    • Small for thin hair
  • 1 small hair tie
  • 1 bobby pin to secure the scrunchie (optional, but may help for fine and thin hair)

To style this look:

  1. Comb or brush knots and tangles out of your hair, then part it down the middle.
  2. Divide the top half of your hair in line with your eyes and section it into two parts with one on the right and one on the left, stopping around the same distance as your ear so that the half-down part stays separate.
  3. With two fingers, twist the two sections so they form a rope but don’t coil, or whatever texture you’d like and secure them behind your head just below the crown (like a high ponytail) with the hair tie.
    1. If you want the twists to disappear into your hair, loop the lower section of hair over them like you do in a Barbie ponytail for depth and dimension.
  4. Take the two twisted strands that form the ponytail part and feed your hair through the scrunchie.
    1. Double twist the scrunchie for a stronger grip, or add the bobby pin to the scrunchie and hair tie to secure it in place.
  5. Tease out your hair with your fingers including the twists and the half-down section so it flows and lays the way you want it.
Once you get good at styling this look, there’s endless possibilities for styling it from formal events to music festivals. Try braiding the half-up sections instead of twists, and adding a flower crown for more texture and colors. If you found this style guide inspiring, and want more, enter your email below.
